Gum Disease Treatment in Mississauga

Gum disease treatment in Mississauga protects your teeth from an infection of the gums and the bone that holds them in place. Gum disease often starts quietly, with gums that bleed when you brush, and it’s a leading cause of tooth loss in adults. At River Run Dental Centre, our hygienists and dentists treat it with deep cleanings and ongoing periodontal care.
The earlier you start gum treatment, the easier it is to reverse or control gum disease. We’re open 7 days a week, including evenings and Sundays.
Benefits of Treating Gum Disease
Healthy gums protect your teeth. Treating gum disease early stops the damage before teeth loosen and need to come out.
Stops bleeding and swollen gums
Helps prevent tooth loss
Freshens bad breath that won't go away
Supports your overall health

How Our Gum Treatment Works
Treatment depends on how far the disease has progressed. It starts with a full gum check.
Gum Assessment
We measure the pockets around each tooth and take X-rays to check the bone.
Scaling and Root Planing
A deep cleaning removes tartar and bacteria below the gumline and smooths the roots so the gums can reattach.
Periodontal Maintenance
Periodontal cleanings every three to four months keep the infection under control.
A deep cleaning is usually done in one or two visits, with the area numbed for comfort. Your gums may be tender for a few days, and most people see less bleeding and swelling within a couple of weeks. For advanced periodontitis or gum grafting, we refer you to a periodontist and continue your regular care with us.

Gum Disease Treatment Cost in Mississauga
Gum disease treatment cost in Mississauga depends on how advanced it is and how much of your mouth needs treatment. Gingivitis treatment is often a thorough cleaning plus better home care. Scaling and root planing, also called a deep cleaning, is charged by the time or number of areas treated, so it costs more than a regular cleaning. The average cost of periodontal treatment in Ontario varies from clinic to clinic. When you compare one deep cleaning price with another, check how many areas of the mouth it covers, since periodontal fees are often based on time or the number of areas treated.
With insurance: most workplace plans cover scaling and periodontal cleanings, often up to a set amount of time each year. We’ll check your coverage.
Without insurance: we’ll give you the cost before we start. If you’re looking for cheap or affordable gum disease treatment, the least expensive option is treating it early, before you need more visits.
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) covers scaling, root planing and other gum treatments for eligible patients.

Signs of Gum Disease: Bleeding, Swollen and Receding Gums
Gum disease has two main stages. Gingivitis is early inflammation that can be reversed with a professional cleaning and good home care. Periodontitis is more advanced: the infection damages the bone, and it can be controlled but not fully reversed. Watch for:
- Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
- Swollen gums that are red, puffy or tender
- Receding gums that make teeth look longer or feel sensitive
- Bad breath or a bad taste that won’t go away
- Teeth that feel loose or have shifted
The main causes are plaque and tartar build-up along the gumline. Smoking, diabetes, hormone changes, some medications and genetics raise your risk.
To fix bleeding or swollen gums in the early stage, brush twice a day along the gumline, floss daily and book a cleaning. Receding gums don’t grow back on their own, but treatment stops them getting worse, and early gum recession can often be managed with a softer brush and better technique.
Gum Disease Care for Adults and Seniors
Gum disease is most common in adults over 30, and the risk rises with age.
- Adults: busy schedules, stress and smoking can let gingivitis build up. A cleaning every six months catches it early.
- Pregnant patients: hormone changes can cause pregnancy gingivitis, and a cleaning during pregnancy is safe and helpful.
- Seniors: dry mouth, medications and receding gums make periodontitis and root cavities more likely, so regular periodontal cleanings matter.
- People with diabetes: gum disease and blood sugar affect each other, and treating your gums can help both.
Between visits, a soft toothbrush, daily flossing or interdental brushes, and regular teeth cleanings are your best defence.

Gum Disease Treatment in Mississauga: Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on how advanced the disease is and how many areas need treatment. Gingivitis may only need a thorough cleaning, while scaling and root planing takes more time. Most insurance plans and CDCP cover gum treatment, and we explain the cost first.
Gingivitis, the early stage, can be reversed with a professional cleaning and good brushing and flossing. Periodontitis can't be fully reversed, but treatment stops it getting worse and helps you keep your teeth.
We numb the area first, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Your gums may be tender for a few days afterwards, and warm salt water rinses help.
Bleeding gums are usually an early sign of gingivitis, caused by plaque along the gumline. Keep brushing and flossing gently, and book a cleaning. If the bleeding lasts more than a week or two, it's time for a gum check.
Not usually. Our hygienists and dentists treat most gum disease, including deep cleanings and maintenance. For advanced periodontitis or gum grafting, we refer you to a periodontist in Mississauga and coordinate your care.
After gum disease treatment, most people need a periodontal cleaning every three to four months instead of every six. Bacteria can rebuild below the gumline in that time, so regular visits keep it under control.
Most workplace plans cover scaling and periodontal cleanings, often up to a yearly limit. The Canadian Dental Care Plan also covers gum treatment for eligible patients. We'll check your coverage before treatment.
