River Run Dental Centre Accepts Manulife Dental Plans

Looking for a Manulife dentist in Mississauga? At River Run Dental Centre, we accept dental plans from Manulife and we direct bill Manulife for most plans, so you usually only pay your share at the visit.

Manulife is one of Canada’s largest insurers. Most patients have Manulife dental coverage through their employer, but Manulife also sells individual health and dental plans to people who are self-employed, retired or between jobs.

We’re a family dental clinic at 11-1525 Bristol Rd W, near Creditview Rd, open 7 days a week, including weekday evenings and Sundays. New and existing patients are welcome.

Direct Billing to Manulife

As a dentist that accepts Manulife, we send your claim electronically at your appointment. The insurer replies within minutes with what your plan pays, and we tell you the balance before you leave.

  • Bring your plan card, or your plan and ID numbers.
  • If you have a second plan, such as a spouse’s, bring those details too. We can bill both.
  • A few plans pay you rather than the clinic. We still submit the claim for you; you pay at the visit and your insurer reimburses you.

Manulife Members: Check Your Coverage and Claims Online

We submit your claim for you at your visit, so there’s nothing to file. Manulife members can follow everything in the Manulife Mobile app or the plan member site, signed in with a Manulife ID.

  • Your most recent claims appear on the home screen, each with a progress bar that shows where it is in the review.
  • Your benefits card lives in the app, and you can add it to your digital wallet.
  • For larger work, Manulife notes that your dentist “knows what we need, and most can submit an estimate directly to us for you” (Manulife group benefits claims). We send that estimate before treatment.

Covered by a spouse’s plan too? Once coordination of benefits is set up, Manulife says “a dental office may submit a claim to your benefits plan first, and then to your spouse’s plan” (Manulife group benefits FAQ). We do both for you.

Children on your planUnder 21, or under 25 if a full-time student (proof required)

Why Manulife May Pay Less Than the Full Bill

A common question is why a Manulife plan didn’t cover the whole amount. Manulife explains that “The amount we pay for a claim may be determined, in part, by our fee guide” (Manulife group benefits FAQ). Dental associations publish fee guides each year, and Manulife notes its guide may differ from the one your dentist uses.

On top of that, your plan pays its own percentage and has a yearly maximum. We send the claim before you leave and tell you the balance at checkout. For larger work, we send a predetermination first, so the gap is clear before treatment starts.

Checking Your Manulife Dental Balance and Family Coverage

To see what’s left this year, Manulife says to “Select Coverage & balances on the homepage” of the plan member site, where you’ll find Health, Dental, Drugs and spending accounts.

For families, Manulife’s general rule is that children under 21 can be covered, or under 25 if they’re full-time students. If your child is turning 21, check with your plan administrator before their next cleaning. If part of a claim is paid to you, Manulife says direct deposit usually arrives within 1 to 2 business days, but you can only set it up on the plan member site.

No Employer Plan? Manulife Flexcare and FollowMe

Manulife also sells personal plans. Flexcare is for people without employer coverage, or whose work plan doesn’t cover enough, with “seven plans to choose from” (Manulife Flexcare).

If you’re leaving a job, FollowMe is designed for you. Manulife says coverage is “guaranteed with no medical questions asked when you apply and pay your first premium within 90 days of your employee benefits ending” (Manulife FollowMe). Manulife also says you may be able to convert group dental coverage to individual coverage.

What Manulife Dental Coverage Usually Includes

Your Manulife dental coverage depends on the plan your employer or group chose, so two people with the same insurer can have very different benefits. Most plans are split into three levels:

Basic care

Exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions and often root canals, usually covered at the highest rate.

Major care

crowns, bridges and dentures, usually covered at a lower rate.

Orthodontics

Braces and aligners, included in some plans with a separate lifetime maximum.

Most plans also have a yearly maximum and limits on how often some services are covered, such as a cleaning every six or nine months. We check these before treatment so there are no surprises.

Are Braces and Dental Implants Covered?

It depends on your plan. Some plans include orthodontic coverage for braces and Invisalign, often with a lifetime maximum and sometimes only for children. Dental implants are covered by a growing number of plans, usually as major care, while others cover a bridge or denture instead.

Before larger treatment like braces or implants, we send a predetermination to your insurer. It shows exactly what your plan will pay, so you can decide with the real numbers in front of you.

Making a Manulife Dental Claim

You don’t need to make a dental claim yourself: we submit it electronically at your visit. Even if your plan pays you rather than the clinic, we still send the claim for you. Afterwards, you can see the claim and what your plan paid in the Manulife Mobile app or member website.

Keep your receipts, and check that your personal and dependant details are up to date with your insurer. Most claim problems come from a changed address, a new dependant or a second plan that hasn’t been set up yet.

How Common Treatments Are Usually Covered

Every Manulife plan is different, but most follow the same pattern. This is how common treatments are usually covered, so you know what to ask about:

TreatmentUsual coverageGood to know
Checkups and teeth cleaningBasic care, usually the highest rateOften limited to every 6 or 9 months
FillingsBasic careTooth-coloured fillings on back teeth may be paid at the silver filling rate
Root canalBasic or major, depending on the planA crown afterwards is usually major care
Extractions and wisdom teeth removalBasic careImpacted teeth may need X-rays sent with the claim
Gum treatment and scalingBasic careOften limited by time units each year
Crowns and bridgesMajor care, often a lower rateSome plans limit replacement to every 5 years
DenturesMajor careRelines and repairs are usually covered too
Braces and InvisalignOrthodontics, only if your plan includes itUsually a separate lifetime maximum
Dental implantsMajor care on some plansOthers pay the cost of a bridge or denture instead
Teeth whitening and veneersCosmetic, usually not coveredBonding to repair a broken tooth may be covered

The exact percentages, limits and waiting periods are in your Manulife dental plan booklet. We check them for you before treatment.

Predeterminations, Claims and Annual Maximums

Predetermination

Before larger work, such as crowns, dentures, implants or braces, we send a Manulife dental predetermination with the treatment plan and X-rays. The insurer replies with what your plan will pay, usually within a couple of weeks, so you know your cost before you commit.

Claims

We submit every claim for you, electronically wherever possible. If one has to go on paper, we complete it and send it to your insurer ourselves.

Annual maximum

Most Manulife plans set a yearly limit on what they pay. It usually resets every January or on your plan’s anniversary date. If you’re close to your maximum, we can plan treatment across two plan years so more of it is covered.

If You Have Two Dental Plans

If you’re covered by Manulife and another plan, such as a spouse’s, the two plans can share the cost. This is called coordination of benefits. Your own plan pays first, then the second plan can pay some or all of what’s left.

For children covered on both parents’ plans, Canadian insurers usually use the birthday rule: the plan of the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year pays first. We set this up for you when you bring both sets of plan details.

Finding a Manulife Dentist Near You

Canadian dental plans, including Manulife, generally let you choose any licensed dentist, so you don’t need to find an in-network clinic. If you’re looking for a dentist near you in Mississauga, we’re at 11-1525 Bristol Rd W, near Creditview Rd, open 7 days a week with evening and Sunday hours.

Using Your Manulife Plan at River Run

  • Book: call or book online and mention you have Manulife coverage.
  • Bring: your plan card, photo ID and any second-plan details.
  • Before treatment: we check your coverage and explain any cost that isn’t covered.
  • At checkout: we bill your plan directly and you pay only your share.

We also direct bill Canada Life, Green Shield and Blue Cross, along with most other Canadian plans. No coverage for part of your treatment? Ask about our payment plans. You can compare all the plans and programs we accept on our dental insurance and direct billing page.
