A custom sports guard in Mississauga protects your teeth, lips and jaw during hockey, soccer, basketball, martial arts and other sports. A sports guard, or sportsguard, takes the force of a hit or fall, so a knocked-out or broken tooth is much less likely. At River Run Dental Centre, our dentists make mouthguards for kids, teens and adults, shaped to fit each player’s teeth.

A well-fitted guard stays in place, so it’s easier to breathe, talk and drink water during a game. We’re open 7 days a week, including evenings and Sundays, so fittings are easy to fit around practice.

Benefits of a Custom Sports Guard

Dental injuries in sports happen fast, and a broken or knocked-out tooth can take months of treatment to fix. A good mouthguard lowers that risk.

Helps protect teeth from breaks and knock-outs

Cushions lips, cheeks and tongue

Stays in place during play

Easier to breathe and talk in

How We Make Your Sports Guard

A custom mouthguard usually takes two short visits, about one to two weeks apart.

Check-Up and Fit Plan

We check your teeth and bite, and ask which sports you play and whether you wear braces.

Scan or Impressions

We take a digital scan or impressions, and a lab makes the guard in your chosen colour.

Fitting Your Guard

We check the fit, make sure you can breathe and speak comfortably, and show you how to care for it.

Bring your guard to every practice and game, not only tournaments. Rinse it after use and keep it in a vented case. Growing kids and teens usually need a new guard as their teeth and jaws change, so we check the fit at each checkup.

Why Choose River Run for a Sports Guard

We make guards for the whole family and know how to fit them around braces, growing teeth and dental work. If you play more than one sport, we’ll help you choose one guard that works for all of them.

Fitted for Each Player

Lab-made guards follow the shape of your teeth, so they stay put without biting down.

Clear Costs, Insurance Billed

We explain the cost first and send the claim to your plan for you.

Sports Guard Cost in Mississauga

Sports guard cost in Mississauga depends on the thickness of the guard, the material, and whether it needs to fit around braces. A custom mouthguard costs more than a store-bought one, because it’s made from a scan of your teeth and checked for fit. When you compare the average cost of a mouthguard in Ontario or look at mouthguard fees, ask what’s included in the price.

With insurance: some workplace dental plans cover part of a custom sports guard. We’ll check your plan and send the claim for you.

Without insurance: you’ll know the full mouthguard price before we start. If you’re looking for a cheap or affordable sports guard, a boil-and-bite guard from a store is better than no guard at all. A custom guard fits better and usually lasts longer.

We’ll also check whether the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) covers a guard for your child.

Types of Mouthguards for Sports

There are three main types of mouthguard. The right one depends on your sport and how well it needs to fit.

  • Stock mouthguards: ready-made and inexpensive, but loose and bulky, so they’re hard to talk and breathe in.
  • Boil-and-bite mouthguards: softened in hot water and shaped by biting. They fit better than stock guards but can be thin in places.
  • Custom mouthguards: made by a dental lab from a scan of your teeth. They fit closely, stay in place and have an even thickness.

Hockey, football, lacrosse, boxing, martial arts, rugby, basketball, soccer and skateboarding all carry a risk of mouth injuries. If a tooth is knocked out, pick it up by the crown, not the root, rinse it gently and put it back in the socket or in milk, and call us right away. A tooth is most likely to be saved if it’s back in place within the first hour.

Sports Guards for Kids, Teens and Adults

Anyone who plays a contact or fast-moving sport can benefit from a mouthguard.

  • Kids: a guard protects new adult front teeth, which are often the first teeth hurt in a fall. Kids usually need a new guard as their teeth come in.
  • Teens: we make guards that fit over braces, so the brackets don’t cut the lips and cheeks.
  • Adults: a guard protects natural teeth, crowns, veneers and implants in hockey, martial arts and weekend sports.

If your child plays in a league that requires a mouthguard, we can usually fit one in before the season starts.

Yes. We make guards that fit over braces and protect the lips and cheeks from the brackets. Your child may need a new guard as their teeth move.

Adults can often use a custom guard for a few seasons. Kids and teens usually need a new one sooner as their teeth and jaws grow. Replace any guard that's torn, thin or loose.
