River Run Dental Centre Accepts Healthy Smiles Ontario
Looking for a Healthy Smiles Ontario dentist in Mississauga? River Run Dental Centre accepts Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO), and we bill the program directly, so eligible children get their dental care at no cost to the family. We’re a dentist who accepts Healthy Smiles Ontario for new and existing patients.
We’re a family dental clinic at 11-1525 Bristol Rd W, near Creditview Rd. Our dentists see babies, children and teens every day, and we’re open 7 days a week, including after school and on Sundays.
What Is Healthy Smiles Ontario?
Healthy Smiles Ontario is a government-funded dental program for children and youth 17 and under from eligible low-income families. It pays for preventive, routine and emergency dental care, so kids can see a dentist regularly instead of only when something hurts.
Who Is Eligible for Healthy Smiles Ontario?
Your child may qualify if they are:
- 17 years old or younger
- Living in Ontario
- From a household that meets the program’s income rules, or that receives certain benefits such as Ontario Works, the Ontario Disability Support Program or Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities
Families on Ontario Works or ODSP are usually already enrolled. Income limits and other rules change from time to time, so check the current Healthy Smiles Ontario eligibility details on the Government of Ontario website.
What Does Healthy Smiles Ontario Cover?
Healthy Smiles Ontario covers the care most children need, including:
- Checkups and exams
- Cleanings, scaling and fluoride
- Sealants and X-rays
- Fillings and extractions
- Emergency care for pain and infection
Some treatment for a badly damaged tooth, such as root canal (pulp) treatment, may be covered, while cosmetic work and most orthodontics aren’t. Dentures are rarely needed for children and generally aren’t part of routine coverage. We check what the program covers before any treatment and explain it to you.
How to Apply for Healthy Smiles Ontario
You can apply online through the Government of Ontario, by mail, or with help from your local public health unit. In Mississauga, that’s Peel Public Health.
- Check whether your family is already enrolled through Ontario Works or ODSP.
- If not, complete the Healthy Smiles Ontario application and include proof of income.
- Once approved, you’ll receive your child’s client ID. Bring it to your first visit.
If your child needs urgent care while you wait, call us. Children in pain may be able to get emergency coverage right away.
Healthy Smiles Ontario and CDCP
Children under 18 may also qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). The two programs have different rules, and a child can’t bill the same treatment to both. If your child qualifies for both, we’ll help you understand which one to use for each visit.
Healthy Smiles Ontario Dental Card and Forms
Once your child is enrolled, you’ll receive their Healthy Smiles Ontario client ID, usually on a card or letter. Bring it to every visit. You don’t need to fill in claim forms yourself: we send the claim to the program for you and complete any Healthy Smiles Ontario dental forms needed for treatment that requires approval.
At your child’s first visit, you’ll also fill in a short health history form, the same as any new patient.
Keeping Coverage Active and Renewal
Healthy Smiles Ontario coverage continues while your child stays eligible, but families may be asked to confirm their income or renew from time to time. Keep your address and contact details up to date so you don’t miss a renewal letter. Coverage ends when your child turns 18, so plan a last checkup and cleaning before then.
What If Treatment Isn't Covered?
If part of your treatment isn’t covered by Healthy Smiles Ontario, we’ll tell you before we start and explain your options. These may include a simpler treatment that is covered, spreading treatment over several visits, a payment plan, or checking whether you qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan. You’ll never be surprised by a bill.
Finding a Healthy Smiles Ontario Dentist Near You
