River Run Dental Centre Accepts Canada Life Dental Plans

Looking for a Canada Life dentist in Mississauga? At River Run Dental Centre, we accept dental plans from Canada Life and we direct bill Canada Life for most plans, so you usually only pay your share at the visit. We also accept plans that still carry the Great-West Life name.

Canada Life is one of the country’s biggest group benefits providers. In 2020, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life joined under the Canada Life name, so if your card or old paperwork still says Great-West Life, it’s the same company and the same plan.

We’re a family dental clinic at 11-1525 Bristol Rd W, near Creditview Rd, open 7 days a week, including weekday evenings and Sundays. New and existing patients are welcome.

Direct Billing to Canada Life

As a dentist that accepts Canada Life, we send your claim electronically at your appointment. The insurer replies within minutes with what your plan pays, and we tell you the balance before you leave.

  • Bring your plan card, or your plan and ID numbers.
  • If you have a second plan, such as a spouse’s, bring those details too. We can bill both.
  • A few plans pay you rather than the clinic. We still submit the claim for you; you pay at the visit and your insurer reimburses you.

Canada Life Members: Check Your Coverage and Claims Online

Canada Life confirms that your “dental office” can “submit a claim on your behalf” (Canada Life claims process), and that’s what we do at every visit. To keep an eye on your benefits, use My Canada Life at Work:

  • Coverages and balances shows what your plan includes, how much you’ve used and how much you have left.
  • Claim history lists processed claims, each with an explanation of benefits you can save as a PDF for your taxes or a second plan.
  • If you have questions about a claim, we can look at it together at the front desk.

Canada Life’s general guidance is that claims are due within 15 months of the date of service, though your own plan can set a different limit. Because we bill at the visit, timing is rarely an issue.

Canada Life at a Glance

The details Canada Life members ask us about most, in one place:

What to know
Old namesGreat-West Life and London Life became part of Canada Life on Jan. 1, 2020
PredeterminationSometimes answered in real time, otherwise usually within five business days
Federal public servantsThe Public Service Dental Care Plan (PSDCP) is administered by Canada Life. PSDCP line: 1-855-415-4414
Personal plansFreedom to Choose health and dental claims line: 1-866-430-2863

Still Have a Great-West Life or London Life Card?

You can still use it. On Jan. 1, 2020, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life amalgamated into one company, The Canada Life Assurance Company (Canada Life amalgamation). Canada Life says any reference to Great-West Life or London Life is now understood as Canada Life.

You didn’t need to sign anything or fill out forms; the change happened automatically. Bring whichever card you have, and we’ll bill Canada Life.

How Canada Life Predeterminations Work

Before crowns, implants or braces, we send Canada Life a predetermination. Canada Life may be able to assess it in real time; if not, it says it “should assess the claim or predetermination within five business days” (Canada Life dental provider FAQ).

If you and your spouse both have Canada Life plans, there’s one extra step: a separate predetermination is needed for the second plan. We send both, so you know the full amount covered before crown or implant treatment starts.

Federal Public Servants and Canada Life Personal Plans

Many federal employees in Mississauga have dental coverage through the Public Service Dental Care Plan (PSDCP), which Canada Life administers. If your plan card shows the PSDCP, questions about your benefits go to Canada Life’s PSDCP member line at 1-855-415-4414 (Canada Life PSDCP contact). We bill the PSDCP directly, the same as any Canada Life plan.

If you bought a Canada Life personal plan (Freedom to Choose), Canada Life says its personal plans waive the 30-day waiting period for routine dental “if you’ve had other dental coverage within the last 60 days” (Canada Life waiting periods). Major dental usually still has a waiting period. Canada Life says your dental office can submit Freedom to Choose claims for you (Freedom to Choose claims), and we do.

What Canada Life Dental Coverage Usually Includes

Your Canada Life dental coverage depends on the plan your employer or group chose, so two people with the same insurer can have very different benefits. Most plans are split into three levels:

Basic care

Exams, cleanings, X-rays, fillings, extractions and often root canals, usually covered at the highest rate.

Major care

crowns, bridges and dentures, usually covered at a lower rate.

Orthodontics

Braces and aligners, included in some plans with a separate lifetime maximum.

Most plans also have a yearly maximum and limits on how often some services are covered, such as a cleaning every six or nine months. We check these before treatment so there are no surprises.

Are Braces and Dental Implants Covered?

It depends on your plan. Some plans include orthodontic coverage for braces and Invisalign, often with a lifetime maximum and sometimes only for children. Dental implants are covered by a growing number of plans, usually as major care, while others cover a bridge or denture instead.

Before larger treatment like braces or implants, we send a predetermination to your insurer. It shows exactly what your plan will pay, so you can decide with the real numbers in front of you.

Making a Canada Life Dental Claim

You don’t need to make a dental claim yourself: we submit it electronically at your visit. Even if your plan pays you rather than the clinic, we still send the claim for you. Afterwards, you can see the claim and what your plan paid in the My Canada Life at Work app or website.

Keep your receipts, and check that your personal and dependant details are up to date with your insurer. Most claim problems come from a changed address, a new dependant or a second plan that hasn’t been set up yet.

How Common Treatments Are Usually Covered

Every Canada Life plan is different, but most follow the same pattern. This is how common treatments are usually covered, so you know what to ask about:

TreatmentUsual coverageGood to know
Checkups and teeth cleaningBasic care, usually the highest rateOften limited to every 6 or 9 months
FillingsBasic careTooth-coloured fillings on back teeth may be paid at the silver filling rate
Root canalBasic or major, depending on the planA crown afterwards is usually major care
Extractions and wisdom teeth removalBasic careImpacted teeth may need X-rays sent with the claim
Gum treatment and scalingBasic careOften limited by time units each year
Crowns and bridgesMajor care, often a lower rateSome plans limit replacement to every 5 years
DenturesMajor careRelines and repairs are usually covered too
Braces and InvisalignOrthodontics, only if your plan includes itUsually a separate lifetime maximum
Dental implantsMajor care on some plansOthers pay the cost of a bridge or denture instead
Teeth whitening and veneersCosmetic, usually not coveredBonding to repair a broken tooth may be covered

The exact percentages, limits and waiting periods are in your Canada Life dental plan booklet. We check them for you before treatment.

Predeterminations, Claims and Annual Maximums

Predetermination

Before larger work, such as crowns, dentures, implants or braces, we send a Canada Life dental predetermination with the treatment plan and X-rays. The insurer replies with what your plan will pay, usually within a couple of weeks, so you know your cost before you commit.

Claims

We submit every claim for you, electronically wherever possible. If one has to go on paper, we complete it and send it to your insurer ourselves.

Annual maximum

Most Canada Life plans set a yearly limit on what they pay. It usually resets every January or on your plan’s anniversary date. If you’re close to your maximum, we can plan treatment across two plan years so more of it is covered.

If You Have Two Dental Plans

If you’re covered by Canada Life and another plan, such as a spouse’s, the two plans can share the cost. This is called coordination of benefits. Your own plan pays first, then the second plan can pay some or all of what’s left.

For children covered on both parents’ plans, Canadian insurers usually use the birthday rule: the plan of the parent whose birthday comes first in the calendar year pays first. We set this up for you when you bring both sets of plan details.

Finding a Canada Life Dentist Near You

Canadian dental plans, including Canada Life, generally let you choose any licensed dentist, so you don’t need to find an in-network clinic. If you’re looking for a dentist near you in Mississauga, we’re at 11-1525 Bristol Rd W, near Creditview Rd, open 7 days a week with evening and Sunday hours.

Using Your Canada Life Plan at River Run

  • Book: call or book online and mention you have Canada Life coverage.
  • Bring: your plan card, photo ID and any second-plan details.
  • Before treatment: we check your coverage and explain any cost that isn’t covered.
  • At checkout: we bill your plan directly and you pay only your share.

We also direct bill Green Shield, Blue Cross and Desjardins, along with most other Canadian plans. No coverage for part of your treatment? Ask about our payment plans. You can compare all the plans and programs we accept on our dental insurance and direct billing page.
